“On behalf of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Seattle, the public is invited to attend the 11:00 AM worship service and subsequent Veterans Dinner on November 10, 2019. This event is free and dedicated to those who wear the military uniform and Veterans and families who have served,” states Pastor Carey G. Anderson.

Information will be shared about:

  • The King County Veterans Program which serves low-income, homeless, disabled, and at-risk veterans and their families.
  • How the Veterans Program can meet the emergency needs of entitled and eligible veterans and their families.
  • How the Veteran’s Program provides funding to supplement existing services. This support has continued with King County voters approving the Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy in November 2017.
  • Other services funded by community-based organizations and nonprofits.
  • Learn about other programs from federal and state partners.

This event is in partnership with the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle (ULMS) to provide navigation assistance through the various Veterans and Senior programs throughout King County. “The ULMS has found that many families are eligible for the Veterans and or Senior property tax exemption but are not taking advantage of this benefit,” per Vice President of Housing and Financial Empowerment, Linda Taylor

“The financial benefits offered will parallel with engagement in learning invaluable resources available to veterans and families, “states Urban Financial Services Coalition (UFSC) Founder and Executive Director Lizzie Martinez Alvarez. The UFSC aim to economically empower Veterans by providing collaborative services that inform, inspire and teach Veterans and their families how to leverage their government benefits. Studies have proven that financial literacy is key to sustaining economic stability.

Representatives from Starbucks Armed Forces Network will also be in attendance.

Upon the arrival of the unfortunate morning of Hurricane Katrina’s 12th year anniversary…and still I rise above the flood waters.  The heart-wrenching emotions I’m feeling for my fellow Texans are overwhelming.  Again, the pit of my stomach is saying, “Do.Something.” As I review lessons learned from a capstone paper written in 2015 as a requirement of the Executive MPA program at the University of Washington Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, I’m encouraged by the progress the current administration has made in terms of emergent collaboration, leading and governing by networks, and the importance of the independent sector.  Now more than ever, the nonprofit industry is reaching out to our communities and private citizens to engage in a national disaster.  “Tweak the Tweet” is Working.  I must admit the “Government is Working” in the worst natural disaster in the State of Texas.  I applaud President Donald Trump’s rapid response to Hurricane Harvey.  Albeit the capstone  PA EX 513 Leading for Legacy with Video was historically-based and written in March 2015, the challenges of leading and governing in a complex crisis are still relevant today.

Please read the publication and prepare to take away notes and solutions to address yesterday’s issues today.  The Urban Financial Services Coalition (www.ufscnet.org) entered a MOU with Operation Hope (www.operationhope.org) and the FDIC (www. fdic.gov), focusing on plans, outcomes, successes and solutions. Emergency financial first aid kits are now circulated to the underserved and unbanked communities. Take the test at http://www.dfrscore.org to see if you are prepared for the next disaster. The local UFSC-Puget Sound Chapter intends to roll out Operation Hope’s Disaster Recovery Financial Planning Workshops during September 2018.  Stay tuned at http://www.ufscps.org for future workshops in the Pacific Northwest.

My personal and intimate prayers go out to all of my family, friends and cohorts in Texas. May God comfort and keep the Gulf Coast citizens in safety.

April received the 2015 Young Mother of the Year Award for WA State through American Mothers. In addition, she has been awarded the 2015 Ruby Award by Soroptimist International for making a difference for women through her charitable efforts.

April started the Edmonds WA Chapter for Days for Girls in October of 2013 out of a passion to help homeless girls within her community have adequate access to feminine hygiene. Since the Chapter’s inception, she and her volunteers have distributed over 1,500 DfG kits and thousands of disposable products to keep girls in school, both locally and globally.

April grew up in South Carolina and still considers herself a southern girl. She loves southern food, warmer weather and sweet tea in the summer. She met her husband, a WA native, 25 years ago and has been in WA ever since. She was smitten! She and her husband have called Edmonds home for over 25 years, where they raise their two teens. They find that a sense of community is very important to them, as well as supporting their local church with outreach efforts, & being actively involved in their children’s school.

In her spare time she enjoys walking, hiking, baking, reading and most importantly, spending time with her family.

WSECU and UFSC Reality and Resource Fair

In Community Awareness, Economic Empowerment, FEPPP, Financial Literacy, K-12 on May 18, 2017 at 5:35 pm

Washington State Employees Credit Union (WSECU) is facilitating a Financial Reality Fair for the Middle College High School students and we’re looking for volunteers to give us a hand.

What is a Financial Reality Fair, you ask? It’s an educational, interactive simulation event for high school students. Students are given scenarios that place them in the future after completion of a form of secondary education. The simulation gives students an opportunity to experience what life looks like on their own, with financial responsibilities.

Your role as a volunteer will be to assist the students through the simulation at various stations. These valuable events are dependent on participation from our Community Partners like you. With your participation, we are able to offer high schools this valuable experience at no cost. We will be facilitating one session  – 10:00 to 11:30 am.

UFSC Financial Services Resource Fair begins at 12:30 -1:30 in the Northgate MCHS South Classroom on the second floor of the Mall. NEFE Module 6 Insurance: Protect What You Have Handout at the Mosaic Insurance Booth. Visit Go Pluto, Sound Community Bank, WSECU, MassMutual, Future and Focus Dream Catcher Enterprises and KeyBank.

What to bring: Business cards, life experience and a smile!  Refreshments provided by WSECU.

To sign up as a volunteer, please contact Karen Childs. If you are not able to attend, but know someone that you think would be interested in volunteering, please let Karen know. Check in at 9:30 am for a brief training.

Thank you for helping us Make a Difference in our communities. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Karen Childs, CUDE. Community Relations Coordinator, WSECU Community Relations or email kchilds@wsecu.org or call her mobile at: (360) 790-8443.

VA Home Loan – $0 Down

In Community Awareness, Economic Empowerment, Financial Literacy, Veterans Affairs on November 1, 2016 at 11:59 pm

Join us for a complimentary reception in the Holland America Dining Room at the World Trade Center Seattle with hors d’oeuvres and a FREE workshop for Active Duty Military Personnel and Veterans with ID. See the va_event flyer for details.  Register to attend at http://www.eventbrite.com/e/va-home-loan-0-down-tickets-28627918876.

“Since 1944, the Veteran Affairs (VA) has backed over 22 million home loans for Veterans and their families.  The program provides a guaranty for mortgage loans made by private lenders to eligible Veterans.  The guaranty backing effectively eliminates the need for a down payment, helping Veterans afford home ownership.  No other major no-down mortgage program exists in the market today, and typically around 90% of VA loans are obtained with no down payment.  As of September 30, we reached the milestone of over 700,000 home loans guaranteed for the fiscal year 2016.   That 700,000+ figure is the most home loans guaranteed in one fiscal year in the history of the program.

VA continues to modernize the program, reducing time spent in the loan approval process while also improving the accuracy of benefit delivery, Veteran outreach and communication. These improvements have allowed VA to maximize opportunities to promote the attractiveness of the program to lenders, builders, real estate agents and most importantly to our active duty Servicemembers, Veterans, and surviving spouses.

The VA Home Loan program benefit is not a one-time benefit– it’s reusable.  VA loans can be obtained for up to the full appraised value of the home (100% loan-to-value).  In addition, there is the potential for these loans to include up to $6,000 towards improvements for energy efficiency, AND the loan funding fee can be rolled right into the loan balance.  VA waives that funding fee for Veterans who receive VA compensation benefits, those who are service-connected disabled, but serving on active-duty, or those drawing retirement pay. Some surviving spouses are also exempt from the funding fee.

We are proud to say that our VA Home Loan program can also help Veterans who are current homeowners.  Many borrowers are now looking to take advantage of historically low interest rates to refinance their homes.  Just 5 years ago, the average interest rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage was 6%; today that same rate is around 3.5%.  Veterans can reuse their VA benefit to streamline refinance an existing VA loan, often with no money out of pocket.  On these streamline refinance loans, VA requires no appraisal and no credit underwriting, which can be of great assistance to Veterans who may have suffered a minor credit setback, or whose home values may have declined during these past few years.  Last year, a streamline refinance decreased the average Veteran’s interest rate 1.4%, and saved $202 a month in mortgage payments.  Cumulatively, our Veteran borrowers saved over $300M last year!

For Veterans with FHA or conventional loans, VA can also assist with the ‘regular’ refinance program.  Since VA does not charge borrowers upfront or monthly mortgage insurance premiums, refinancing from an FHA loan into a VA loan can save Veteran borrowers a significant amount of money.

We encourage Veterans to seek the advice of a financial professional to determine what mortgage decisions are in their best interest.  Join us at the upcoming workshop for veterans and active duty military personnel.  Mortgage lender Dave Haley of Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation to learn how to apply for your next home. Realtor and Principle Manager Peter Badgett of Urban Properties will provide links to some of the most ideal properties on the market for sale.  Alex Collins and Steven Jewell, well-qualified financial experts at Quantified Wealth Advisors will provide insight on the importance of mortgage insurance.

In addition, VA stands ready to assist Veterans who have already obtained a VA home loan.  If you already have a VA loan and are facing financial difficulty, please call to speak to VA loan representatives at 877-827-3702.  In FY16, of all loans that defaulted, 84% were saved from foreclosure.

Veterans may obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for their Home Loan Guaranty benefit online through eBenefits or through their lender:https://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits/homepage
